This month starts a series of articles that will appear in the newsletter for the remainder of the year. These articles will contain tips and ways to cope with difficult people in your association.
One strategy for keeping the peace with difficult members is to simply listen. Allow the member to speak their piece, because trying to silence a member who wants to voice an opinion can spark even more controversy and problems. Often, when they get whatever is bothering them off their chest, they feel as if the association cared to listen to them. Ask questions calmly and respectfully. Listening long enough can often get to the heart of the real issue, whether it is a legitimate association concern or a dispute between neighbors.
While listening is important and useful, keep in mind that listening does not mean that the Board must subject itself to abusive behavior from an owner. But often being kind, giving your attention and respect can diffuse any potential abusive confrontation and result in a more productive conversation and achieve better results.
